תשובות לתרגול
- would not have happened
Answer: would not have happened. An imaginary past situation uses the third conditional: if + past perfect, would have + past participle.
- was
Answer: was. After a negative phrase such as 'Not only' at the start, we invert subject and verb: Not only was the project late …
- to have made
Answer: to have made. The action (made) happened before the saying, so we use the perfect infinitive after 'is said': to have made.
- would have taken
Answer: would have taken. 'Had I known' is an inverted third conditional (= If I had known), so the result is would have + past participle.
- be given
Answer: be given. After verbs such as recommend, suggest and insist in formal English, we use the base form (subjunctive). Here it is passive: be given.
- having sent
Answer: having sent. 'Deny' is followed by the -ing form; the perfect -ing shows the sending happened earlier: having sent.
- If I had known, I would have helped.
Answer: If I had known, I would have helped.. In standard English, 'would' does not appear in the if-clause. The third conditional needs if + past perfect: If I had known.
- had
Answer: had. 'Hardly … when' describes one past event immediately followed by another. With 'Hardly' first we invert, and the earlier event is past perfect: Hardly had the meeting begun.
