Later Bells at Harel High
(1) Last September, Harel High in the town of Givat Shaked moved its first lesson from 8:00 to 8:45. The change followed a student council survey in which 68% of 420 students said they regularly felt sleepy in the first lesson.
(2) After one term, the school compared attendance and grades with the previous year. Late arrivals to the first lesson fell from an average of 31 a day to 12. Average grades in first-lesson subjects rose slightly, from 78 to 80, while grades in other lessons stayed the same.
(3) Not everyone is convinced. Some parents say the later start makes their own mornings harder, and the sports coach complains that afternoon training now ends in the dark in winter. "Two points is not a revolution," says one teacher. "We need at least a full year of data."
(4) Principal Dana Levi agrees that the evidence is early. "We are not claiming a miracle," she says, "but fewer late arrivals already means calmer first lessons. We will publish the full-year results in June."

Hi Tom,
You asked about later starts. Harel High now starts at 8:45 instead of 8:00. After one term, only 12 students a day were late, not 31. I would like a later start too, because I am always tired in the first lesson and I can't concentrate. The only problem is that school ends later.
Write soon, Avi
4 points | B1 | Opinion paragraph (about 120 words)
In my opinion, our school should start at 8:45. First, the Harel High data show that late arrivals fell from 31 to 12 a day, so lessons could begin calmly. Second, many students feel sleepy early in the morning, and a later start may help them concentrate. It is true that the evidence comes from only one term, and grades rose by just two points. However, even a small improvement, together with less lateness, makes the change worth trying for a full year.
5 points | B2 | Formal report to the school board (about 180 words)
Report: A later start to the school day
Purpose This report summarises the evidence from Harel High and recommends a course of action.
Findings After moving its first lesson from 8:00 to 8:45, Harel High recorded a fall in daily late arrivals from 31 to 12. Average grades in first-lesson subjects rose from 78 to 80, while grades in other lessons remained at 81.
Reliability The reduction in lateness is substantial; the grade change, however, is marginal. Moreover, the data cover a single term and compare different years, so other factors may account for the results. Reported costs include harder mornings for some families and winter training that ends after dark.
Recommendation It is recommended that the board pilot an 8:45 start for one full year, provided that attendance and grades are compared with a similar school and that sports schedules are adjusted. A final decision should follow the publication of this data.
