Data and mediation | table, 6 questions and a relay task: יחידה משולבת באנגלית לכיתות י׳ ו־י״א בנושא קבלת החלטות על סמך ראיות, ברמות 3, 4 ו־5 יחידות, עם הסברים מלאים, תשובות לדוגמה ומחוונים.

Explaining data to someone else

Mediation means passing information to another person in a form they can use. Read the table, check the numbers, and say only what the listener needs. Watch out for yearly versus one-time costs.

Relay task

Mediation | 4 pts | B1

Mediation (written, 60-80 words, English): Your grandmother reads only Hebrew news and asks what the survey shows. Write the English notes you would use to explain the table to her simply.

Rubric | B1

  • Selects only the relevant information for the listener (B1 mediation).
  • Numbers are accurate and simplified (first, close behind).
  • Adds one key explanation (yearly vs one-time cost).
  • Short, clear notes rather than copied sentences.

תרגול

  1. [3 pts | A2+] Look at the table. How many students chose the bike lanes?

    1. 112
    2. 136
    3. 152
    4. 400
  2. [3 pts | A2+] What percentage of students chose the skatepark?

    1. 28%
    2. 34%
    3. 38%
    4. 72%
  3. [4 pts | B1] Which statement correctly describes the data?

    1. Most students chose the café
    2. The café was chosen by fewer than half of the students
    3. The skatepark was the most popular
    4. All students voted
  4. [4 pts | B1] A friend asks in Hebrew which projects together fit the ₪150,000 budget. Which pair fits, using the table's costs (café for one year)?

    1. Bike lanes + skatepark
    2. Café (one year) + skatepark
    3. Bike lanes + café
    4. All three
  5. [5 pts | B2] Which conclusion is best supported by BOTH the table and the transcript?

    1. The café has won the final vote
    2. The early lead is small, and new cost information could change the options
    3. The skatepark should be cancelled
    4. Students do not care about the vote
  6. [5 pts | B2] Why is it misleading to say 'the café costs less than the bike lanes' without explanation?

    1. Because the café is free
    2. Because the café's cost is yearly and continues, while the lanes are paid once
    3. Because the lanes cost nothing
    4. Because the table has no costs

פתרונות

Model answer (one possible answer, not the only correct one):

Notes: 400 students answered. Café first, 152 students (38%). Bike lanes close behind, 136 (34%). Skatepark third, 112 (28%). The café is ahead, but by only 4%, so the result is not clear yet. Also important: the café costs money every year, the other two are paid once.

תשובות לתרגול

  1. 136
    1. Correct answer: 136.

    2. Read the row 'Bike lanes': 136 students. 400 is the total number of respondents.

  2. 28%
    1. Correct answer: 28%.

    2. 112 out of 400 students = 0.28 = 28%. 72% would be everyone who did NOT choose it.

  3. The café was chosen by fewer than half of the students
    1. Correct answer: The café was chosen by fewer than half of the students.

    2. 38% chose the café: the largest share, but less than half (50%), so 'most students' is wrong.

  4. Café (one year) + skatepark
    1. Correct answer: Café (one year) + skatepark.

    2. ₪60,000 + ₪90,000 = ₪150,000, exactly the budget. Any pair with the bike lanes (₪150,000 alone) exceeds it.

  5. The early lead is small, and new cost information could change the options
    1. Correct answer: The early lead is small, and new cost information could change the options.

    2. The table shows a 4-point gap (38% vs 34%); in the transcript Noa brings new cost information (₪40,000) that creates a new option. The final vote has not happened yet.

  6. Because the café's cost is yearly and continues, while the lanes are paid once
    1. Correct answer: Because the café's cost is yearly and continues, while the lanes are paid once.

    2. ₪60,000 per year is ongoing; after 2.5 years it equals the lanes' one-time ₪150,000. Comparing yearly and one-time costs requires explaining the time frame.
