Sequence words (First, Then, After that, Finally) order steps. Linking phrases (However, As a result, For example, In addition) show the relation between ideas. Reference words (it, they, this, the former) point back.

Punctuation

A linking phrase at the start of a sentence is followed by a comma: However, it was too late.
